Farmfoods is one of the leading specialists in frozen food, with 300 stores across the UK. Its new 175,000ft2 distribution centre, a single storey temperature-controlled building at Severnside, Bristol, was a particularly important site and presented a series of challenges.
The design brief for the 16,500m2 roof specified it should be rapidly constructed and provide lasting protection against the elements but the nature of the building meant it also needed to meet exacting insulation and environmental specifications. Maintaining the frozen food in perfect condition, in the most energy efficient way possible, was a critical factor. That’s why IKO Polymeric’s unique Spectraplan TPE single ply roofing membrane was specified, and in particular the new and innovative Spectradek.
Spectradek is a new, single component, factory engineered roof panel, made of a high performance single ply TPE waterproofing membrane with insulation and a trapezoidal steel panel. The Spectradek system uses IKO’s Spectraplan TPE as its waterproofing membrane, which is BBA certified in excess of 30 years. It’s manufactured using the very latest in polymer technology at our Clay Cross plant in Derbyshire.
One of the major benefits of TPE membrane is its excellent welding characteristics. It has an impressively wide welding window with operating temperatures from 200°C to 650°C. The product is very quick to install too: it can achieve welds at speeds of up to 7 linear metres a minute. Tony Wall, Managing Director of the subcontractor, ISD Solutions comments: “Because of the unique attributes of TPE it’s less dependent on the need for good weather for installation, meaning less down time on the tools. All of this contributes to saving time on site, as we can install quickly in almost all conditions.” This means the roof was fitted quickly and safely to a high standard – exactly what the Farmfoods project needed.
Unmatched environmental credentials
A key part of the brief was to minimise the environmental impact of the new building. TPE membrane is a very pure product, with a polymer content of over 65%. It’s free from halogens such as chlorine and bromine, and there are no plasticiser or HCFCs. In addition, as the hot air welding process doesn’t require solvents or generate smoke it provides a fumeless, safe working environment. The roof also had to ensure the building was energy efficient too: the Spectradek panel over the ambient warehouse gives a thermal performance of 0.23 W/m2k, while the high reflectivity of the single-ply membrane helps to reduce fuel bills and maintain a more constant temperature within the building: ideal for a frozen food logistics centre.
Farmfoods has been equipped with one of the greenest, most thermally efficient retail distribution centres of its type in the UK. IKO Polymeric offers a ‘one-stop-shop’ for highperformance waterproofing solutions, with a wide range of single ply roofing systems (including pre-fabricated membranes) that use the latest polymer technology, insulation and adhesives. It’s the only UK-based PVC and TPE manufacturer and celebrates its 10 year anniversary in 2015.
